World Day of the Handicapped

jj

📜 History

  • This day was first proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) in 1992.
  • The UN General Assembly decided that December 3 would be a global day to:
    • highlight disability issues
    • support inclusive development
    • encourage equal opportunities for all
  • Over time, the term “handicapped” has been replaced with “persons with disabilities”, which is more respectful and rights-based.

🎯 Objectives

  • Create awareness about physical, mental, intellectual, and sensory disabilities.
  • Encourage governments to improve accessibility (education, healthcare, jobs, transport).
  • Promote inclusion and break stereotypes or discrimination.
  • Highlight success stories of people with disabilities.

🌍 Theme (Every Year)

Every year the UN declares a theme that focuses on disability rights, inclusion, and empowerment.
(If you want the latest theme, I can fetch it!)
