Important Update: Earlier, members could activate UAN through the EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal. However, now the UAN activation service is available only through the UMANG App. So, make sure you use the correct platform.
What is UAN?
The Universal Account Number(UAN) is issued by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). It is a unique 12-digit number assigned to each employee contributing to EPF. Once activated, you can check your PF balance, download your passbook, update your KYC details, and more.
Step-by-Step Process for UAN Activation
Step 1: Register Mobile Number on UMANG App.

- Download and open the UMANG App.
- Enter your mobile number.
- Make sure your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar card.
- You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP).
- Enter the OTP to verify your number.
After verification, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Set Your MPIN
After verifying the OTP:
- You will need to create a 6-digit MPIN.
- You will use this MPIN every time you log in to the UMANG App.
- Create and confirm your MPIN.
- Click Submit.
Once submitted, the home page of the UMANG App will appear.
Step 3: Search for EPFO Service
- On the home screen, use the search bar.
- Type EPFO.
- Open the EPFO service section.
You will see three options:
- UAN Allotment and Activation
- UAN Activation
- Face Authentication of Already Activated UAN
Since you already have a UAN but have not activated it, select UAN Activation.
Step 4: Enter Required Details
You will need to:
- Enter your UAN number.
- Enter your Aadhaar number.
- Confirm your mobile number linked with Aadhaar.
- Click the checkbox.
- Click Send OTP.
The OTP will be sent to your mobile number linked to Aadhaar.
Step 5:Face Authentication
After verifying the OTP:
- You will need to complete Face Authentication.
- Download the Aadhaar Face RD application if prompted.
- Follow the instructions to scan your face.
Important Note:
- Your live face scan must match the photo on your Aadhaar card.
- If the faces do not match, the process will not be completed.
Step 6: Verify Aadhaar Details
Once the face authentication is successful:
- Your Aadhaar details will show on the screen.
- Check all details carefully.
- Click Submit.
Step 7: UAN Activated Successfully
- After submission:
- A default password will be sent to your registered mobile number.
You will receive a confirmation message stating:
“UAN has been activated successfully and the default password has been sent to your mobile number.”
Congratulations! Your UAN is now successfully activated.
What You Can Do After Activation
Now that your UAN is active, you can:
- Check your PF balance.
- Download your EPF passbook.
- File online claims.
- Track claim status.
All these services are available through EPFO via the UMANG App.
